Choosing your perfect celebrant
Understanding the different types of celebrants available is very important for your special day. Whether for a funeral, memorial service, naming ceremony, baptism, renewal of vows, blessing, or a wedding, it is crucial to ask the right questions and get answers that meet your needs. On this page, we hope to help you understand the differences and become clear as to how you would like the day to be remembered.
My flexible approach
The starting point for these answers is with my services. No matter what you would like to organise or celebrate, I am in a unique position to be able to work with you on it. I can provide services that are very traditional to very quirky and unique to you. I am fully registered in the Republic of Ireland to solemnise weddings or marriages and am working towards becoming registered in the North of Ireland.

Make your day Memorable
As with all aspects of life, flexibility, humour, and professionalism can all come together to make your day memorable. Part of what I offer is unlimited access to myself from the first day we agree to begin planning. I also offer six booklets for the wedding party and the Certificate of Marriage. These come as part of a memory case that you will have, which will contain all that happened during the ceremony.

Together, we will make the day feel special and important. It is important that your guests remember the ceremony as something special, and we can and will make that happen. You will be able to look back on the day with strong, positive memories of how you chose to celebrate your union. Success, for me, means I include all that I can to make it exactly how you want it to be.
Wedding Ceremony Checklist and Options.
A traditional Wedding in a Church or Place of Worship.
All legal requirements are usually met by the Priest or Minister being recognised by the government.
A Humanist Ceremony.
If you are choosing a Humanist Practitioner, in N Ireland, they are registered to conduct legal Ceremonies.
An Independent Celebrant.
You also have the option to book a Celebrant that will work with you with no restrictions. They help you design your day with 'no holds barred'. Hugh is an Independent Celebrant and can include anything you would like, which includes Religious, Spiritual, Humanist or whatever mix you would like.
Key Terms:
Registrar: A legal representative who conducts ceremonies legally.
Solemniser: Another word for a legal representative. Used in the Republic of Ireland.
Humanist. A celebrant who conducts legal ceremonies whilst helping you tell your love story, as part of the ceremony.
Celebrant. Usually an Independent person who designs, builds and delivers your ceremony with you with no restrictions. Usually an Independent Celebrant requires that you have your legal requirements met.
Understanding the differences with Celebrants
This is an area I get a lot of questions about.
People can get confused by the different terms used for Celebrants. Hopefully you will understand which type of Celebrant you would like to have.
It is only in the case of Marriages/Weddings that legal requirements need to be met.
For Naming Ceremonies/Baptisms, Vow renewals or Blessings and Funerals, you are free to choose how you would like them to happen.
Traditional to Quirky.
Your Choice
Some people like to get married in the Religious Tradition of their families. This is usually conducted at a Church by the Priest or Minister of that Parish. In this case the Religious Minister also acts as a Legal Representative and so the Marriage is recognised.
Others choose a Registrar for their legal Ceremony. This can be either in the registry office or at a building legally registered to conduct such ceremonies. An example of this would be the Belfray Country Inn, just on the outskirts of the Maiden CIty. Here couples fill out a form which is taken to the registry office. The form includes the date and the time of the Ceremony and who will be conducting it. The person conducting it is usually the legally appointed Registrar for the City or another Legally Registered representative.
Humanist Weddings
If you would like to have a Humanist Ceremony, the Humanist Society in Northern Ireland have a list of Celebrants who are also legally registered to conduct weddings at your place of choice. A Humanist Ceremony, like the Registry Office Ceremony, is for those who choose not to have any religious influences in the ceremony. It is based on love and the story you have created together.
Spirituality
Sometimes Spirituality is important to Couples. This takes many forms in our ever changing world. If you would like to include some sense of Spiritual meaning in your Ceremony, Hugh will work with you express all that you would like to express. There are many ways to do this and we will find the way that is important to you.
Inter Faith or Inter Cultural Ceremonies
Hugh is in a very unique position to help you include any cultural or religious traditions from various backgrounds. We work together to honour both your stories and include the most important parts.
